The Shop on Duke Street
My father kept the shop open through the storm. I remember the sound of the shutters, and how calm his voice was when he told me to hold the door. We rebuilt the shelves ourselves. That winter he taught me every knot he knew, and the place smelled of sawdust until spring. I did not know it then, but that was a beginning.
